Pharmacist takes the blood pressure of a customer

Initially available via an invite from local GPs and through selected pharmacies; free Health Checks are now more widely available to people across the county who meet the given criteria. The checks aim to reduce individual risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease.

Part of a national programme; each health check takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with individuals having their height, weight and blood pressure measured. They are also asked some simple questions about their health and lifestyle. A simple blood test will check their cholesterol level, and in most cases results are available at the same appointment.

If appropriate, staff are able to signpost those attending tests to local support or healthcare.

Anyone with pre-existing conditions (heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes or kidney disease) will already be managing these with their doctor and will not need a check. Anyone with concerns about their personal health is advised to see their GP in the usual way.

A list of participating pharmacies can be found in the downloads box on the right of this page.

Some additional criteria may apply in certain areas, please speak to the pharmacy to establish whether you are eligible.
