Occupational therapy

Swanage hospital works to enable patients to manage their lives as independently as possible in the community, despite disability.

This may be achieved through assessment, appropriate intervention, evaluation, health promotion and/or the provision of equipment.

Assessments may include activities of daily living, orthotic splinting, hand and upper limb function test or cognitive and perceptual performance testing.

Home visits or ward patients prior to final discharge home allow the patient and multi-disciplinary team to plan a safe discharge from hospital.

Referrals to occupational therapy are accepted from consultants, GPs and other health professionals. Routine patient referrals can normally be seen within one week.

Hospital and community visits are available.

For queries regarding Occupational Therapy, please telephone (01929) 475042.

Physiotherapy

Some methods of physiotherapy we use are:

  • manual therapy
  • therapeutic exercise
  • acupuncture
  • electrotherapy
  • locomotion/gait analysis

We also appreciate psychological, cultural and social factors influencing your own role in helping your recover.

Referrals are accepted from consultants, GPs, Minor Injury Unit staff and other health professionals.

Patients referred on an urgent basis, for example, are contacted by phone and seen within three working days of referral.  All other patients will receive a letter from the department letting them know a referral has been made and inform them of current waiting times.  Patients are written to again when appointments become available and will be asked to book a stuiable date and time. The team work hard to ensure no patient is kept waiting more than four weeks for treatment.

Patients who are unable to attend the department and suitable for home treatment are referred to the community physiotherapy team at Swanage Health Centre.

Neurological and rehabilitative physiotherapy

Jo Tripp, Senior Physiotherapist and Philip Slemon Physiotherapy Assistant Practioner provide the physiotherapy input that patients with neurological or orthopaedic problems may require as part of their assessment, treatment and ongoing multidisciplinary management.

Patients are seen as inpatients on the ward, outpatients in the rehab clinic or in their own homes.

For further details an any aspect of neurological physiotherapy services, please contact Diane Goff on 01929 475016.

Gynaecology/urotherapy physiotherapy

Senior Physiotherapist Jo Tripp provides a comprehensive urotherapy service for patients experiencing symptoms of urine leakage, incontinence, urgency or frequency.

Radiography

Swanage X-ray Department is open weekday mornings. People are referred by their Health Practitioner or from the Minor Injuries Unit.

Most appointments are provided within a few days of referral by a GP. Reports on x-rays are made by a visiting Radiologist from Poole Hospital and are usually received by GPs around ten days after the x-ray appointment itself.

The picture archiving communication system (PACS) was implemented in January 2006.  X-ray images are stored digitally and allows them to be transferred to different hospitals via computer.  This has many advantages and has improved the efficiency and throughput of the department.

An Ultrasound Service is also offered on Friday mornings, and is operated by visiting specialists from Poole Hospital.

Appointments

If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason, please contact the department on 01929 475016 as soon as possible.
