Minor Injury Units including Accident and Emergency
If your injury is not serious you can get help from a minor injury unit (MIU) rather than an emergency department. By doing so you allow emergency department staff to concentrate on people with serious and life-threatening conditions and save yourself a potentially long wait.
Minor injury units can treat things like sprains and strains, broken bones and wound infections. They cannot treat more serious problems such as chest pain, stomach pains or conditions likely to require hospital admissions.
If it is a medical emergency – if you believe that you, or a member of your family, cannot wait until the next day if you don’t get medical help immediately – then you should call 999 and ask for an ambulance.
