HPV vaccination

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is also known as cervical cancer vaccination.

It is offered to all 12- to 13-year-old girls to protect them from cervical cancer in later life.

The jab protects against two types of HPV, which cause more than 70 per cent of cervical cancers.

It is estimated that about 400 lives could be saved in the UK every year as a result of vaccinating girls before they are infected with HPV.

The programme is delivered in secondary schools and consists of three injections that should ideally be given over a period of six months.
