High risk diabetic foot service
If you have a foot emergency such as new ulcer, swelling, pain or discolouration, you should see your GP or other health professional who can refer you to the service.
There are two different services available:
- hospital-based foot care
Patients with a foot ulcer or acute Charcot are immediately referred directly to the hospital-based multi-disciplinary foot care team. Management of these conditions will be shared by the hospital and community teams - community high-risk clinics
A patient with a stable, healing ulcer might only attend the hospital on a monthly basis for review, but attend the community high-risk podiatry clinic every one to two weeks. Additional dressing changes will be made by the practice or district nursing services. Once the foot ulcer is healed, care needs to be taken to prevent the ulcer returning
Attending the clinic
Bring an up-to-date medication list, including the dose and frequency.
- please ensure you advise clinic staff of any changes to your medication.
- you may have a number of tests, including scans and X-rays to help the staff diagnose and manage your foot condition
Accessing the service
You will need GP or health professional referral to be considered for the treatment.
