From 1 July 2011, Dorset Primary Care Trust has transferred the management of community based health services (including those detailed on this web page) to Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust.

Visiting to all Community Hospitals is 15:00 – 16:30 and 18:30 – 20:00hrs.

It is also requested that only two visitors per bed at any time.

The Ward Manger will be able to make any discretionary exceptions for relatives who wish to give assistance to patients eating or for patients who are unwell.

The wards

Tarrant Ward has 24 beds. The focus of care is elderly rehabilitation, with a small number of beds allocated to providing palliative and respite care.

The Betty Highwood Unit provides care for up to 18 clients over 65 who need specialist intervention while suffering from specific mental health problems.

Outpatient clinics

Is a busy unit which holds clinics every week day with 29 visiting consultants from Dorchester, Poole and Salisbury Hospitals covering 50 specialities. The team is supported by medical secretaries and the medical records team.

Minor aliments and injuries unit (MIUs)

The MIU is a local treatment centre for designated sessions for minor ailments out of hours. It also acts are a referral pathway to acute units is via Poole, Dorchester and Salisbury.

The unit actively provides health promotion and accident prevention.

Day surgery theatre

The theatre offers a wide range of minor and intermediate surgery:

  • general
  • orthopaedic
  • plastic
  • gynaecological

The unit also offers an endoscopy service for gastroscopy, colonoscopy, cystroscopy and nystaroscopy.

Prior to a procedure the patient is requested to attend a pre-assessment appointment where they receive pre-operative checks and advice on pre and post operative care speciic to their procedure.

This also enables you to ask any questions you may have about your treatment.

X-ray and ultrasound

The X-ray department is off the corridor leading from the main reception area and has its own waiting room. The department has modern and up-to-date equipment.
Facilities are available for x-ray and ultrasound examinations and referral from minor injuries, GP, out patient and inpatient departments.

Opening hours are 9.00am - 5.00pm - Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for x-ray and Tuesday Ultrasound. The unit is closed on Fridays.

Physiotherapy department

Is a service for both inpatients and outpatients. The facility includes an exercise room and a hydrotherapy pool.

Occupational therapy department

Provides rehabilitation for people who need to maintain or regain their independence following an illness or accident.

This service is provided to patients within the hospital or in their own homes.

Day hospital

The day hospital is the site for several services:

Community rehabilitation team

Is a clinical team of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, rehabilitation nurses and rehabilitation assistants who assess and treat people over 65 in their own home. They also provide one day a week care at the hospital and an out-of-hours rapid response service.

 

Fall prevention service community rehabilitation team

Falls are not just a problem for older people due to the injuries sustained, they also result in loss of confidence and the fear of future falls. Loss of confidence may lead to decreased levels of activity causing loss of muscle strength, flexibility and balance, and confidence.

We are here to help break this cycle and help you get back on your feet if you have had a fall.

 

Health review clinic

This is held for physically disabled adults between the ages of 16 and 65 and offers people a co-ordinated health assessment and care plan.

The clinic operates two sessions every Friday, 9.00am-12.00pm and 1.00pm - 4.00pm.

Community mental health team for older people (CMHT-OP)

The team provides assessment, treatment and support for people over 65 with mental health problems. This is may be given individually or in groups, at home or in one of our day hospitals.

Day hospital for older people with memory problems and/or confusion

The centre is owned by Dorset Social Care and Health who run a day centre for older people six days a week.
The day hospital provides assessments for older people, along with therapeutic activities to maintain existing skills, social contact and carer respite.

The group is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.30am-3.00pm.

Lunch and drinks are provided free. Hospital transport can be provided. Referral is via the community mental health team.

Cardiac support groups

The group provides a local service for patients and their partners to help them to return to as normal a lifestyle as possible after a cardiac event.

Women's health service

The Women's Health Service focuses particularly on osteoporosis and menopause issues.

Other available services

Hotel services

Provide all aspects of housekeeping requirements. The catering department provide a 24-hour service for inpatients, and is open from 8am to 5.30pm for staff and visitors. All menus are based on the better hospital food guidelines. A vending machine is provided for out-of-hours.

Library services

St John Ambulance provide Caring for Life library services for patients, run by a group of volunteers. They provide a very wide choice of books, some of which are in large print. The volunteers visit Portman Ward on Wednesdays at 2.30pm.

Milldown unit

This unit provides mental health services for people under 65. General management for this unit is with the Trusts mental health services.
