Adult service

Who Do We See?

Adults with acquired speech, language and/or swallowing problems, especially stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, brain tumour, head injury and frail elderly. People with voice disorders need to be seen by ENT initially, who will refer to the voice therapist as appropriate.

Where?

Outpatient appointments can be offered at the various Community Hospitals and Dorset County Hospital.  We can also see people in their homes, care homes or day centres, when this is more appropriate.

When?

Our service aim is to see people with:

  • Swallowing difficulties: within 2 weeks of receipt of referral.  Please note we must have a written referral from a Doctor to see clients with swallowing problems.
  • Communication difficulties: within 8 weeks of receipt of referral.
